Five striker transfer targets for Chelsea in January

  • Chelsea desperately need a new striker - well, one that can score at least!
This was proven when they drew a blank yet again against Arsenal on Monday and scored only one against Swansea while Samuel Eto'o had an awful game.
Eto'o, Torres and Ba have only managed to score five goals between them which is nothing others than pathetic. Eto'o peaked a long time ago and is not good enough to be a starter. Ba is not of the quality required to challenge for a league title.
As for Torres, he is the best of the three (which isn't hard!) but cannot find the magnificent form he had at Liverpool though does show some moments of class; especially when he links up with Juan Mata.
Here, I will look at five potential - and very possible - targets for Chelsea's new look attack. Can any of them make the difference Chelsea need?
    1. Radamel Falcao (AS Monaco)
This is the player any team would love to have leading the line. However, when he signed for Monaco there were many rumours circulating that they were having money problems and weren't paying all their taxes so supposedly had to sell players.
This could mean Chelsea could snap him up, probably around £35-45million and he would be sure to score goals for fun.
He was the best striker in the world last season at Atletico and was on fire; he's dropped off the radar recently but a move to London would change that. Should Chelsea offer a high enough wage for him (and I mean high!), Falcao would probably sign up.
    2. Wayne Rooney (Man United)
'The Happy One' was desperate to buy Rooney in the summer though its not 100% clear if they lodged a bid or not.
It surprised the football world and it was rumoured Rooney was keen but in the end the deal fell through.
However, a lack of goal scorers could mean the Blues go back for a second try for his signature to push on in the league.
He would not have to change much as he already plays in the Premier League and has an excellent track record so unlike the other four targets, he has proved his worth in England. It's the last thing United would want and there's only a very slim chance he would leave in January; José may have to wait until the summer.
    3. Jackson Martinez (Porto)
Another player Chelsea reportedly wanted to sign in the summer. Rumours have circled that he has a substantial buyout clause weaved into his contract.
I'm not too sure he would fit the Chelsea team because it could be argued that he's not an outright striker like Torres or Ba.
He would definitely improve the team but it could take him a while to adapt to the Premier League, though he may fit right in and tear the division apart, like Papiss Cisse a couple of years ago.
It has also been announced he is interested in a move to the Premier League; putting Arsenal and Chelsea on stand-by. Though he has also expressed interest in Serie A, La Liga and Bundesliga so he is somewhat undecided but a move could definitely be on.
    4. Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid)
Another striker here with a buyout clause and this one is high, at £32 million.
Apparently the board at Chelsea are preparing a bid and Costa may want in. He did sign a new contract last year but that was probably engineered by the Spanish outfit to fend off interested teams and to raise his worth.
It worked though because at the end of last season, he was worth £15 million but the buyout clause has raised it to more like £30 million. He would be a good fit for the Londoners and the recent European triumphs could lure him to Stamford Bridge; not to mention the attraction of playing under Mourinho.
    5. Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)
With eight goals and five assists in 16 games, Benzema has had a good start to the season.
He is often under estimated and overlooked at Madrid because of stars like Ronaldo, Bale and Isco but he is an important cog in Real's machine.
Undoubtedly, he would score goals - and lots of them! - in the Premier League and it could benefit him to concrete his first team place in the France squad in Rio.
French players are few and far between at Chelsea so he may be concerned he would be  an outcast though the fans at Stamford Bridge would make sure he felt welcome.
The only reason this move could be hard to pull off is that Madrid have a lack of strikers since Gonzalo Higuan packed his bag for Serie A, in Naples. Benzema may be keen to reunite with Mourinho - or could be put off because of that.
This is an unlikely but not impossible transfer but it would benefit the Premier League if it happened.

  • David Beckham voted world's greatest footballer ever - ahead of Ronaldo and Messi - in UK fans poll

  • David Beckham has been voted the world's best footballer ever, in a poll for UK fans on soccersuckers.co.uk, reports the Daily Star.
The former England captain, who represented Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, LA Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain during his glittering career, topped a star-studded list with an impressive 29 per cent of the votes cast.
Beckham retired from football in the summer, after helping PSG to the Ligue 1 title in 2012/13.
The 38-year-old represented his country on 115 occasions, ranking him second on the Three Lions list of most capped internationals behind Peter Shilton (125 caps), but has the most appearances of any outfield England player.
Also among the top 10 Soccer Suckers list was Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, and four-time FIFA Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi of Barcelona.

Chelsea back-line one of the best in the world, says Ivanovic

  • Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has hailed his side’s defence as one of the best in world football, saying that the Blues’ defence is one of the reasons behind their continued success on the pitch.
Speaking on his nomination for the FIFPro World XI alongside Chelsea team-mates David Luiz, Ashley Cole and club captain John Terry, he also added that Blues’ boss Jose Mourinho is fortunate to have one of the world’s finest back-lines in the beautiful game.
“I always remember the days when I arrived here and I know how good defensively my team-mates were in that moment and they are still very strong,” said the Serbian full-back.
“I think we have one of the best defensive lines in the world now with John Terry, Ashley Cole, Gary Cahill, David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta. I like to talk about the guys who I play with because I get to see how good they are everyday.”
The defender was however quick to add a modest touch to his tone, paying homage to the defensive awareness and contribution of the more offensive players in the Blues’ set-up, saying that it is their hard work as well that makes the Stamford Bridge outfit so hard to break down.
“Our defence is one of the reasons why we have won trophies and so we are happy about this because we all play as a team and all of us make Chelsea a hard team to score against, not just the defenders.”
The Blues’ defensive line-up have featured consistently on the nominees’ shortlist for the FIFPro World XI over the years, with John Terry and Ashley Cole being ever-presents since the award’s inception in 2005.
“Mr. Chelsea” John Terry made the FIFPro World XI every year between 2005 and 2009, and he remains Chelsea’s last defender ever to appear in the World XI.
Chelsea shot-stopper Petr Cech has also been nominated every year except 2009 and 2011, while centre-back David Luiz has been on the shortlist for the last three consecutive years. Ivanovic himself has been nominated for the last two years, and he says he is just happy to appear on the shortlist.
“Personally I am so happy and glad to be included. Of course, when you win trophies you’d expect as many Chelsea players as possible to be included because we all deserve it and we won as a team. I know all our players are good enough and if you ask my opinion, I would put all of our team in it!”
Ivanovic also discussed the incredibly competitive 2013/2014 Premier League campaign, conceding that up to five teams could be in the hunt for the coveted league title this year.
“The Premier League is the best league in the world and it is so competitive because of the great players and because of the fans in the stadium… four or five teams can win the title and it is very exciting.”
“I think both Manchester clubs, Arsenal and Liverpool are all doing well this year so you have a lot of good teams but we have to just focus on ourselves. It’s going to be very difficult and it will be an interesting season.”
